Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

September 6th, 2006

The meeting was called to order by  President Doug Dix.     27 Members in attendance.

Guests: None

Birthdays: Mel Rhodes' birthday was celebrated in song, even though it had been announced the previous week

Anniversaries:  Jeff Hollingsworth, 2 Years

Announcements:  The CRFD needs help installing fire detectors on Saturday, September 16. Volunteers should be at Wilson School, 2301 J Street SW, at 8:00 AM. There will be a brief training period followed by service 4-5 homes to install smoke alarms or replace batteries in existing alarms. We should be done by noon or so. We will be furnished all necessary tools and supplies. We are requesting that our volunteers wear tennis shoes and bring a cell phone, if they have one. Jim Platt, Kelly Allen, Bob Hatala and Keith Sutherland have signed up; we can use lotsa others - call Suzanne Bailey at 286-5231 if you can help or email her at s.bailey@cedar-rapids.org

The Installation of Officers dinner will be at Elmcrest on September 27 at 6:00. The tariff is $10 per head. Choose salmon or pork chop for an entree. *No noon meeting that day, of course.*

Dan Breitbach rose to bemoan the selection of songs today. He likes the club to mumble through some obscure dirge instead of singing good 'ol #23 that we all know. No complaints, though, about singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" as a memorial to John Waggoner.

Thursday, October 5th is the golf outing at St. Andrews, shotgun start at noon and a steak fry about 6 PM for $50.

President Dix announced that the board made donations to Miracles in Motion, Waypoint and to Polk and Taylor schools for field trips.

Happy Bucks:  Happy Bucks became sad bucks in part today, with all donating in memory of John Waggoner. Proud Pa Dan Breitbach threw in a buck for the Coe win - his son plays Quarterback for Coe.

Next week’s program:  Upcoming Program: Dave Rasdal, columnist for the Gazette, will speak on the 13th, and Alfred Ramirez, Diversity Focus Exec. Director speaks on the 20th. No speaker on the 27th - that's the night of the Installation Banquet.

Speaker:  Barb Elsasser, HACAP Food Reservoir Executive Director, runs a 60,000 square foot "warehouse" of donated food that services 98 agencies and 175 food distribution programs in the seven county area.  Barb has been in this position for 16 years, growing it to handle 1.3 million pounds of food last year.  The facts about poverty that leads to a need for this service are close to shocking: over 8% of the residents of the 7 county area served qualify; 6000 households per month access the services, or 72,000 accesses per year.  HACAP is looking for volunteers to pack about 2,000 holiday food and toy boxes for needy families, allowing them about a week's supply of food between Christmas and New Years, along with a few toys and gifts selected to fit the family.  They also seek organizations to Adopt-A-Family from the 350 or so referred to HACAP by schools and other agencies.  HACAP does recover an average of 4cents per pound, 18cents max for those that can afford it, to pay for operation of the warehouse and other unavoidable overhead costs.

Word for the day:   No Word For The Day this week. Knowing Mr. Grimm, there will be a pair next week
