Speaker:  Dave Gosch introduced Alfred Ramirez, Executive Director of Diversity Focus, a relatively new organization in Linn County.  Alfred was born and raised in Los Angeles, attended the University of Columbia in New York, and has been involved with diversity programs on the national, state and now local level for many years.  He moved to Cedar Rapids in February ’06 to take this position.  Alfred gave an interesting talk on the mission of Diversity.  The organization is celebrating its one year anniversary with a press conference on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 10:00 am at the African-American History Museum.  Diversity Focus is a non-profit organization devoted to enhancing the diversity of the CR-IC area and its initial three goals are:

1.  Communication – promoting awareness and an image in the community that diversity is valued

2.  Information Clearinghouse – create a resource center that leverages the many products, capabilities and work of organizations supporting diversity

3.  Program Enhancement – advance new ideas and opportunities to build a more diverse community

Alfred offered to include our website on theirs .

He was well-received by all those in attendance.  Thank you Alfred for your insight and time.

Word for the day:   Wordmeister Don Grimm presented us with “stover” and lo and behold, the incomparable, animal psychic Dr. David Graff came up with the correct answer: the dried stalks and leaves of a field crop (especially corn) used as animal fodder after the grain has been harvested.  This did cost the club president another dollar. To dampen Dave’s enthusiasm for guessing correctly, the incomparable and one and only (thank God) John Anderson added that the good Doctor would know this as he often had owners feed excessive amounts of stover to their animals causing them to become sick and need vet care.

Submitted: Dan Breitbach (Yours Truly)
