Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

August 16, 2006 

The meeting was called to order by President Doug Dix.     32 Members in attendance.

Announcements:  Doug Dix, David Graeff and Jeff Hollingsworth reported on the interclub meeting and golf outing with the Williamsburg Kiwanis club; Dr. Graeff announced a Kiwanis golf event scheduled for Thursday, October 5 at noon at St. Andrews – golf and steak fry for $50; President Dix reminded members of the officer installation banquet at Elmcrest on September 27.  Members and guests will get a great dinner for $10 each.

Happy Bucks:  Scribe missed most, but Don Grimm was in there, Dave Hatala reported on attending a game at Yankee Stadium, and Dave Graeff announced a planned visit.

Next week’s program:  Next week, Vern Jackson of the CR Astronomy club will talk about the new facility being constructed near Palisades Park.  On August 30, Congressman Nussle will speak in support of his bid for the governor’s job.

Speaker:  Carol Luth, volunteer coordinator for Aging Services talked of their many services to elders, with the goal of keeping people happy and healthy in their own homes as long as possible.  AS has 28 paid employees, and is  funded by a combination of United Way, government grants, public health funds and private donations.  AS advocates for medicate waivers, provides social worker services dealing with elder abuse issues, has two adult day care centers (Milestones) in the area, offers an in-home respite, vision enhancement services, coordinates a Chore program for lawn mowing, buys materials for handicap ramps, trains and schedules volunteers for home safety inspections.  Rides to doctor appointments added up to 3000 trips last year, and that program is expanding to provide transportation to pharmacies and grocery stores.  They also do telephone checks and home visits to those at risk.
