Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

August 2, 2006

The meeting was called to order by President Doug Dix.     32 Members in attendance.

Guests: Jody Nolte, Joe’s sister; Jim Moriarity visiting from Cresco Kiwanis Club

Birthdays: Glenn Fox, Joe Schweitzer, Jeff Hollingsworth and Bill Windus

Anniversaries: Kevin McCarville and John Locher

Announcements:  Ray Vaughn announced  that he and Bernice will celebrate 65 years of marriage this week.  Jeff Hollingsworth is organizing a golf outing at Williamsburg.

Happy Bucks:  John Anderson was pleased to see TV ads featuring Drs. McCarville and Graeff talking about their professions; Joe Schweitzer found a lost dog this morning, and orchestrated its’ rescue; Bob Dye’s ministry served 40 kids at camp in Colorado, and announced that peaches from Colorado will be available in the coming week or two; guest Jim Moriarity was happy to get his car fixed; Jim Platt was aglow because of his recent family reunion in Ohio; Dan Breitbach threw in a buck, but the scribe missed why – something to do with a girl he once dated, I think; Duane Kurrelmeyer was VERY happy to be with us – he went to the ER with suspected heart problems last week, but got a thumbs up from the docs; Dick Boardman was happy to return home from vacation and find that their “son” hadn’t trashed the house; Dave Graeff cast a dollar in response to John Anderson’s mention of the TV appearance.

Next week’s program:  Captain Bobby Ratliffe, News Copter Nine

Speaker:  Suzanne Bailey and Greg Buelow of the CR Fire Department told of a $144,000 grant from the federal government (only!  No local match) to purchase 6000 smoke detectors, and install them in homes around the twelve elementary schools in CR in which half or more of the children qualify for reduced cost or free lunches.  Their thesis is that fires and fire fatalities occur most in poorer neighborhoods.  A key to the success of this program is that the detectors are not to be simply handed out – they are to be installed by crews trained by the fire department.  Experience has shown that free detectors are often not installed.  Each of the twelve schools are assigned a Saturday between August 26 and late November, when the detectors will be delivered and installed.  CR Downtown Kiwanis will participate, and a signup sheet for our selected Saturday will be started soon.  A maximum four hour commitment is anticipated. For more information, call Suzanne Bailey at 286 –5231, or email at s.bailey@cedar-rapids.org
