Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

July 26, 2006

The meeting was called to order by President Doug Dix.     25 Members in attendance.

Invocation given by Kevin McCarville

Guests: Would you believe we had one guest, Jennifer McCarville, daughter of Kevin McCarville, soon-to-be teacher in the Sioux City Heelan district and soon-to-be married (July 29)?  Well, my friends, believe.  The introduction given by her dad was so moving that it moved the club to sing two songs in almost? perfect harmony.  Either by her facial expression or her inability to respond, it was deduced by the club that she wouldn’t need our musical services for her wedding.  Fancy that!

Birthdays: Charlene Boardman, alias Ma Breitbach Boardman, celebrates her birthday on July 27.  Unfortunately, she was unable to attend today’s meeting and therefore missed a golden opportunity to hear the club sing again in almost? perfect harmony.

Anniversaries:  There were none

Announcements:  (1)  Doug reminded everyone of the cleanup nights at the Kernels games coming up and to sign the sheet that was being passed around.  Money raised off these three nights will fund pediatric kits.  (2)  Jeff Hollingsworth announced the upcoming interclub with Williamsburg on August 10 followed by golf.  Ten people had signed up already.  Phil Mickelson was a tentative registrant according to the latest info on MySpace.com.  (3)  Paul Anderson reminded everyone that tonight was the backpack stuffing with school supplies for Families Helping Families.  It was being held at Trinity United Methodist Church on the corner of 3rd Ave. SW & 5th St.  Reminder: Board meeting next Tuesday, August 1 at Bradley & Riley Law Firm at noon.

Happy Bucks:
- John Anderson was happy that Jim Doyne is now an expert on the Japanese beetle
- Ray Vaughn was also happy about Jim but for a different reason: he enjoyed the fact that Jim may be the only DJ playing
- “Mares eat oats…” AND also that he will be celebrating his 65th wedding anniversary on the 27th
- John Schweitzer – New Horizon Band concert Aug. 5 at Czech Museum
-Joe Schmall – Xavier HS baseball team in state semis and girls softball to state
-John Waggoner – DON’T EVER LET THE SHOE PROGRAM DIE
-Janet Blackledge – 50th high school class reunion coming up
-Don Grimm – his wife is leaving town……….oh, she asked him to drive her to her sister’s and then he can see old friends and not be responsible for entertaining the ladies
-Bob Gable – wife won the lottery and asked him to pack his bags…he’s out (just a joke and a fine one at that)
-Ron Sunderman – son, a doctor at St. Lukes, is happy that he’s at a place where the nurses give a damn
-Chuck Wehage had 3 bucks and I can’t read my writing to tell you what he was happy about.  Can you believe that?  Well, believe!
- Bill Windus – Twins are doing well and he hopes the Cubs follow suit
- John Anderson – happy that Bob Gable told a funny joke
- Dan Breitbach – he can’t remember what he was happy about either.  Can you believe that?

Next week’s program:  In Progress

Speaker:  John Anderson introduced Tim Hankewich, the new conductor for the CR Symphony.  Tim comes to us from Kansas City.  He gave a very interesting talk and really challenged the mental capacities of our members to stay with him during his presentation.  More than once did I see confused looks on some of the faces of our members when Tim compared conducting to the culinary arts.  These looks were the same type of looks one sees during Don Grimm’s word for the day quiz.  In any event, Tim gave us a little background on what it takes to put together a performance, starting with the selection of the pieces, the planning and preparation and finally the presentation or the actual symphony.  He is very impressed with the support for the arts that he’s seen in Cedar Rapids and the wonderful home for the symphony – the Paramount Theater.  He stressed the importance of the downtown development to the long-term success of the symphony as people have other options along with attending the symphony, such as shopping or having dinner or drinks afterwards.

He majored in piano but also played the trumpet in high school.  However, a conductor needs at least some rudimentary knowledge of all instruments.  In closing, he did say that our musical talent might not quite be up to par with what he is looking for in his concert series and recommended that we keep our day jobs or remain in retirement.

Very nice presentation!

Word for the day:   Don Grimm baffled us once again with “encomium”:  a formal or high-flown expression of praise; a eulogy, panegyric.  In other words gang, let’s not expect an encomium for our singing.  Fran – you get the encomium.

Submitted -  Would you believe that Dan Breitbach submitted this?  Well, believe.
