Happy Bucks:  See "Word for the Day", Below

Next week’s program:  Cedar Rapids Symphony

Speaker:  Speaker: Floyd Hutzell of the Algona Kiwanis Club spoke today on the development of AKTION Clubs.  AKTION Clubs are designed to allow adults living with disabilities to participate in Kiwanis service to their communities.  AKTION Clubs were recognized as an official Kiwanis organization by Kiwanis International in October 2000.

Floyd is coordinating the drive to establish and promote AKTION Clubs throughout the Nebraska-Iowa District.  The Algona AKTION Club was the first to be established in the NE-IA District.  There are now 225 clubs in the world, with 16 of those currently in our District.

The goal is to establish 6 new clubs per year in the District, and Floyd threw out the challenge for the Cedar Rapids Kiwanis Club to be the next to sponsor an AKTION Club.  Requirements to get a club established include a $460 first year cost, a minimum of approximately 15 members to start, a commitment from our club to have Kiwanis members at each meeting of the AKTION Club to assist, and to participate in two joint club activities each year.

Floyd also reported on his recent trip to attend the International Convention in Montreal.  Kiwanis is determined to have 1 million members by 2015, and the challenge to each and every Kiwanian is to make this happen.

Word for the day:   Actually two words to make up for last week:
1. Sanguine: hopeful or confident with reference to some particular issue.
2. Sedulously: diligently, attentively. Used in a sentence: We would have a list of happy bucks above if the scribe would have been sedulously paying attention.
