Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

November 22, 2006

The meeting was called to order by President Chuck Wehage.     32 Members in attendance.

Guests:   Guests:  Interclub from Marshalltown Matons Club including speaker, Tony Balik, Ray Goodman, Dale Benshin and Lyle Weber.

Birthdays:   Sister Charmaine is 39 and holding

Announcements1.  Homeless Children’s Trust Fund Christmas party gift-wrapping is at Target on Blairs Ferry Rd NE on Saturday, December 2.  The scribe did not record the time this starts.

2.  Sandy Batchelor Memorial Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army is Saturday, December 9 at Wal-Mart on Blairs Ferry Rd NE at the East entrance.  Here is the schedule:

10 am – 12 noon:  Janet Blackledge and John Anderson
12 noon – 2 pm:  Mel Rhodes and Paul Anderson.
2 pm – 4 pm:  Rod Thorpe and Don Grimm.
4 pm – 6 pm:  Doug and Sandy Dix
6 pm – 8 pm:  Kevin Carlson and Joe Schmal

Happy Bucks:   Happy Bucks:  Joe Schmall was happy that the Xavier Saints football team won the state of Iowa 4-A championship.  Sister Charmaine was happy that three of the Saints made All-State.  Dick Boardman and Ron Sunderman were happy that Joe and Sister were happy.  Doug Dix was happy that even Kennedy parents can root for Xavier.

Speaker:   Program:  Paul Anderson introduced Tony Balik, retired social worker from Marshalltown and member of Marshalltown Matins Kiwanis Club.  Kids In Cars is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to educate parents about the dangers of kids in and around cars and other motorized vehicles.  The group was started by Terrill Struttmann whose young child was crushed beneath the tires of an SUV that rolled over him after being left unattended in a vehicle.

The three leading causes of kids being injured or otherwise killed or injured cars or other large motorized vehicles include:  1)  Heat exhaustion, 2) Vehicle set in motion by accident, and 3) Backed over.
