Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

November 1, 2006

The meeting was called to order by President Chuck Wehage.     XX Members in attendance.

Guests: Mike Wright (Doug Dix); Pam Landon (Doug Dix) – Pam has submitted her application

Birthdays: none

Anniversaries:  none

Announcements:  The November board meeting will be at Godfather’s in the Town & Country Mall; Today is the last day to order the Xavier HS sweet rolls.  Sister is bringing them to the luncheon next Wednesday;  Our Kiwanis Club will be recognized by Taylor Elementary at its “Galaxy of Stars Nite” for our part in the reading program.

Happy Bucks:  We had a number: Kevin Carlson thanking Charlene & Dick Boardman for sitting with and introducing  Mari Culver to speak; Duane Kurrelmeyer for the Cardinals World Series title and the Tigers’ pitching; Dick Boardman for Xavier HS football and for not wearing his pin; Doug Dix for whatever as I can’t read my writing on this one; Don Grimm had $3 for his wife’s sister’s son’s kidney and pancreas transplant surgery and the engine show in Canada; Ron Sunderman for the Nov. 10 concert chorale performance and tickets were $10 until Rod bartered him down to $5; Joe Schmall for the Cards’ win; Dan Breitbach for his back to school mime program; Jim Platt for his upcoming Medicare program; Chuck Wehage for the Elderhostel in Appalachia that he attended; and John Anderson for being pleased that Breitbach will finally keep quiet.

Next week’s program:  Jim Platt’s Medicare program

Speaker:  Bob Hatala, subbing in for Kelly Moore, introduced Julie Dancer, the Executive Director of the Ridgeview Assistance Living Community and the MeadowView Memory Care Village.  Julie gave a very informative update on the MeadowView facility, located on F Avenue NW, just east of Edgewood.  It’s a healthcare facility that serves seniors 55 years and older.  It provides primary care for persons suffering from dementia and memory problems.  It’s a private pay facility that has no endowments to help fund the operation.  Julie became a big hit when she made her presentation interactive with two handout photos, asking for input on what our members perceived the photos to represent.  Both photos, one of two young boys relieving themselves off the side of a pontoon and the other, five buff guys in shorts/no shirts pushing an RV, elicited a number of very interesting and creative responses.  I was particularly taken by Janet Blackledge’s “Chippendale” thoughts.  Hmmmmm?

Thanks, Julie, for a great program.  I’m sure that we will have several members eventually living out there IF they can remember where it’s located.

Word for the day:   The honorable wordsmith, Don Grimm, presented us with “alacrious” which was solved quickly by Kevin Carlson or someone at his table.  It means “brisk, lively, active”.  Pay up Chuck!

Submitted - Dan Breitbach, your humble and soon to be mime scribe
