Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

Wednesday, October 10, 2007

The meeting was called to order by President Kelly Moore.    27 Members in attendance.

Guests:  Joanne Michlin (introduced by John Schweitzer)

Birthdays:   None other than the incomparable Janet Blackledge

Anniversaries:  None

Announcements:   Kelly Moore announced a short board meeting following today’s luncheon.  Jeff Hollingsworth announced an interclub next Tuesday, Oct. 16 with the Golden K Club at the First Presbyterian Church at 1:00 p.m. at 310 5th St. SE.  Dan Breitbach introduced the Finance and Fund-Raising Committee: Katie Hiatt-Braasch, Mike Poggenklass, Jeff Hollingsworth, Pam Landon, Keith Sutherland, Steve Walrath and Joe Schmall.

Happy Bucks:    Janet Blackledge - $2 for WMT’s ads last Sunday on Kiwanis, compliments of Jim Doyne; Kelly Moore – thank goodness the Cubs were feted last week prior to getting ousted; Sister Charmaine – all new windows in their home for the winter; Bob Dye – the Cleveland Indians knocking off the Yankees; Doug Dix – the Rockies winning and the Yankees losing; John Schweitzer – Gophers and Hawkeyes fighting for the Big Ten cellar; Ron Sunderman – glad to be back from trip with his wife okay and he sporting a burn on the arm; Dr. Graeff – Mizzou’s 41-6 drubbing of the Cornhuskers; Breitbach – Mike Poggenklass said Dan was happy he was on his committee; Mike Poggenklass – his not-so-close buddy Joe Torre may need a job; and John Anderson – begrudgingly bestowed an almost compliment on Dan Breitbach for getting a March date for the pancake breakfast.

Next week’s program: Jim Kern, new executive director of Brucemore

Speaker:    Bob Hatala introduced Stephen Jackson Sr, chair of the Linn County Re-districting commission.  Steve gave an overview of the process of creating 5 district supervisor positions (a change from the current 3) and brought props – specifically, maps showing the different district options under review.  The commission is recommending Plan D.  Each district will consist of 38,340 people give or take 1%.  This is based on the 2000 census.  The next re-districting will occur after the 2011 census.  There is a public hearing at the county annex on Thursday, October 11 at 4:00 p.m. after which a decision will be made to submit a particular plan to the county commissioners for approval.  Steve is a long-time attorney whose main hobby is politics – his reason for participating in this process.

Word for the day We had another break from thinking as Don Grimm was last seen somewhere in North Dakota.
