Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

Announcements:   NE / IA Governor’s Tour will visit Colombia and Equador in February.  Details available from K. Moore.

President Moore asks for a volunteer from the club to replace Bob Hatala as chairman of Sponsored Youth Programs.

An interclub with the CR Golden K is scheduled for 10/16, 1:00 PM at 1st Pres., 310 5th St. SE.  Please join us. 

Happy BucksChuck Wehage expressed thanks for the excellent support during his administration; John Schweitzer invites all to a performance by the New Horizons Band at the History Center on Saturday morning; John Anderson thanked Jim Doyne for his on-air support of Kiwanis; Keith Sutherland reported on guiding Don and Marjorie Grimm around Yosemite last week; Doug Dix is amazed to find the Colorado Rockies in the playoffs; John Locher threw in a buck in celebration of the Red Sox making it in

Next week’s program: Steve Jackson, Chair of the redistricting committee, will speak.  On the 17th, Jim Kern will talk about Brucemoor now that he has assumed the job of executive director.

Speaker: Rob Hogg presented a look forward to the next session of the Iowa Legislature, leading all to an appreciation of that mostly thankless chore.  Some of the items are:

Health insurance/care
Local control over smoking in public places
Outlawing cell phone use by teen drivers
Energy policy
Global warming – what should Iowa do?
Infrastructure – lower gas usage has led to shortfalls in road funds
Reserve Funds – restore accounts raided in recent lean years
Property tax relief, especially commercial
Math and Science education
Funding for promises made in past sessions – teacher pay especially
