Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

Wednesday, September 19, 2007

The meeting was called to order by Vice President Bob Hatala.    22 Members in attendance.

Guests:   None

Birthdays:  Terry Maine (?), Mary Corkery (9/25)

Anniversaries:   None

Announcements: Dan Breitbach reminded everyone of the installation dinner next Wednesday, September 26 at the Clark Alumni House on the Coe campus.  Reception begins at 6:00 p.m. with dinner following at 6:30 p.m.  Cost for the members is $15.00.

Dan also announced the three possible dates for the pancake breakfast: February 16, 23 or March 29.  The latter is during the high school spring break and creates problems for workers.  The recommended date is February 23.

Happy BucksJoe Schmall – belated birthday buck; Dr. Graeff – ISU’s victory of Iowa; Dick Boardman gave $6 to shame his estranged son, Dan, into ponying up big bucks for Coe article in Gazette on Dan’s son, Tommy ( a protest has been filed by Dan as it wasn’t his son’s photo  (good luck Dan on collecting any remuneration); Mel Rhodes was happy about something but I was still stinging from the unfair gang warfare from Boardman and Anderson (as in John); Janet Blackledge gave a buck for each year she’s been in the Club to the foundation; John Anderson should have paid a fine for leading the club on about an accident that Janet was in which turned out to be a joke; Bob Hatala put two bucks in – one for Keith Sutherland who is an ISU fan and one for the great Washington -Kennedy football game that was played last Friday night; Leo Mork, our speaker, threw in a buck for the UNI Panthers; Ron Sunderman’s buck was for his upcoming vacation trip to Maine; and yours truly ponied up $5 for his son’s football performance and Gazette coverage.  The more I think of this, since no one in the club gives me any credit for Tommy’s success (everyone thinks it’s my wife’s genes the kids are blessed with), she should be paying the fines.

Next week’s program:  No meeting next week at Elmcrest since the installation dinner is that evening

Speaker: Ron introduced Leo Mork, a Red Cross volunteer.  Leo is a retired educator – retired 9 years ago from Jefferson HS.  He and his wife have been long-time volunteers for the Grant Wood Area Chapter of the Red Cross.  The Chapter was formed in 1917 and encompasses 7 counties.  The agency provides five major services:

1) Emergency services for disasters, natural or man-made
2) Preparedness education such as First Aid, CPR, pet care, etc
3) Blood services
4) Rapids Aids Project – providing education on HIV and Aids
5) Armed forces communication services

Leo and his work are a part of a 10 – person team.  They are on call a week at a time.  When they go out on disaster relief, it is usually a 3 week commitment of very long hours and hard, but rewarding work.

Leo gave a very nice presentation.  We could tell he loved what he does.

Word for the day: Don Grimm is still on vacation
