Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

The meeting was called to order by President Chuck Wehage.     31  Members in attendance.

Guests:   Bob McAvoy although he’s more like a member than not.

Birthdays:   Aaron Randolph

Anniversaries:    None

AnnouncementsA sparse day for announcements.  The only one:  The Officers’ installation dinner is set for September 26 at Coe College.  Details will come later but the cost will be $10.  Rumor has it that if you want premium seating, send an additional $10 to Kelly Allen’s treasurer, Dan Breitbach, and you might get a better seat than someone else.

Happy Bucks:   . We did have some happy people:  Jim Platt gave $5 figuring he’d get fined for wearing an Obama badge; John Schweitzer – Fran’s fine fine playing puts him in a good mood; Don Grimm – son-in-law and daughter camping in Idaho within earshot of an Air Force bombing site; Joe Schmall – something about this time of year, greatest sport of all, officiating a Coe scrimmage; Keith Sutherland – happy the electric company keeps power to his A/C during the heat wave; Chuck Wehage – happy Glen Fox is handling the shoe program and still sane; Charlene Boardman – overjoyed to see both her sons (at a distance); Steve Walrath – happy mom recognized her; Dan Breitbach – comfortable in his own skin despite absentee parenting; John Anderson – misinterpreted mom Charlene’s missing her sons with the car and not emotionally; Dr. Graeff – begrudgingly happy the Cubs are in the hunt and for the greatest season of all; Bob Dye – just peachy happy that peach sales are going great and to buy next Monday-Tuesday before they are gone.

Next week’s program:  Didn’t catch the name but we will have the Executive Director of the Art Museum as next week’s speaker.

Speaker:   Bob Brooks, long long long time sports announcer, 65 years in fact, gave his insight into sports and in particular, the Hawkeye football team.  Bob made some general comments on the impact computers, Facebook, blogs, etc. have allowed anyone to create their own sports story.  In light of the recent happenings at Iowa with the credit card theft, some of these stories aren’t positive.

On a brighter side, he thinks the Hawks can go 10-2 if the team keeps progressing and QB Jake Christensen can do the job well.  He feels the schedule is very favorable, without the likes of Michigan and Ohio State on the schedule.  The marquee game should be at Wisconsin.  There is good depth at receiver, despite the loss of Douglas.  The defensive secondary should be much improved and he’s confident that the offensive line play will be tough by mid-season as this is Ferentz’s specialty.  Thanks, Bob for the talk.

Word for the day: Don Grimm almost stumped the crowd with “sardonic”.  I didn’t get the slip from Don which is bittersweet news to you and also one of the definitions.  Several members, including Keith Sutherland, danced around the definition enough to force Don and Chuck to cough up the big bucks.

Webmaster Note:  From Wiktionary, 'sardonic - Scornfully mocking or cynical, disdainfully or ironically humorous.  And for you gardeners, the root of this word may come from the flower rununculus sardous (buttercup) which, when eaten, produces a sour or grimacing face.
