Kiwanis Club of Cedar Rapids

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

The meeting was called to order by President Bob Hatala, Esq.  27 Members in attendance.

Guests:    John and Cindy Hook (Kiwanians and RV people) and Byron Tabor

Birthdays:    Ron Sunderman 8/16; Chuck Wehage 8/18

Anniversaries:     None

Announcements:  Mary says the Kernels project is going well; Byron has arranged a ball game for Kiwanis on 8/28 – tickets are $6.50; Christina Djerf and Barbara Hoffman were inducted into our club.

Happy Bucks: Chuck Wehage had a dollar to celebrate Mary Corkery’s success with the Kernels program; Richard Boardman and John Anderson agreed; Janet Blackledge had a big “whew” for escaping after being observed speeding by an officer – figures she saved about a hundred bucks; Byron Tabor went to a ball game and was ID’d by John Anderson; Doug Dix was happy to be in CR traffic after a visit to Chicago; and Mel Rhodes was just happy.

Upcoming Programs:  Bob Dye’s recovering grandson; Jeff Cash – Mercy Hospital

Speaker:  Dr. DeAnna Fitzgerald, a local optometrist, told a hair raising tale of a mission trip to Kenya with a large shipment of glasses and instruments.  By standing up to corrupt customs officials, she was able to save enough money to build a sizeable eye clinic.  The team stayed for a few weeks, and trained locals to provide optometric services on an ongoing basis.  See www.spandainc.com for more information and details.

Word for the day:  recalcitrant – “kicking” against constraint or restriction; obstinately disobedient or refractory

Submitted:   Chuck Wehage
