Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

Wednesday, August 6, 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Kelly Moore.  28 Members in attendance.

Guests:  Paula Grady (applicant for membership); Jessica Stayskal (Laurie Worden)

Birthdays:   John Schweitzer, Jeff Hollingsworth

Anniversaries:  John Locher (2001)

Announcements:  Hemie gave us an update on the African American Museum.  They are still out of their building, but managed to save 90 percent of their collection.

President Moore announced that donations were approved at this month’s board meeting for the Boys and Girls Club and Joey O.

Also, Kiwanis clubs from Algiers (New Orleans) and Clinton IA have contacted him to offer donations or help with cleanup.

Happy Bucks:  Dick Boardman announced his 49th wedding anniversary, and Charlene Boardman promptly corrected that to # 48 (Dick responded that it seemed like 49; Mary Corkery was happy that her nephew visited, and also happy that the visit is over; Chuck Wehage celebrated his 47th wedding anniversary and assured the club that the number is accurate.

Speaker: Dave Koch, communications specialist from the Cedar Rapids Fire Department reviewed his role as principal media spokesman for the City of Cedar Rapids in the weeks after the June flood.  This Iowa State grad and Storm Lake native has returned to his day job at the Fire Department, and went over some of the principal causes of home fires.  In order, causes of fires are: Cooking, Heating, Electrical and Arson.  His advice: take a big spoon or a pot holder with you if the phone rings or someone comes to the door and interrupts cooking.

While smoking is not in the top four as fire causes, it is the number one cause of fatalities due to fire.  Another curious fact: arson is the number one cause of fires on college campuses.

Next week – Foundation II; August 20 is a talk on the youth obesity problem and on August 27 we will hear about the library recovery progress.

Word for the day:   Narcebo – sorta the opposite of placebo – a substance that causes harm to the consumer because he/she believes it harmful.
