Next week’s program:  Charlie Cress – Waste Not Iowa

Speaker: Dr. Graeff introduced Dr. Graf, Dr. Kathy Graf with the Eastern Iowa Veterinary Specialty Center (EIVSC).  As you can tell by the spelling, they are not related.  However, she is related to her husband who goes by the same last name, Graf.  Interesting how that works.

Kathy gave a very informative presentation on the EIVSC.  It serves two primary purposes: 1) A 24 hour emergency care vet facility; and 2) A provider of referral services.  EIVSC is the only 24 emergency care facility in eastern Iowa and it serves dogs, cats and pocket pets.  It is located east of the airport about 2 blocks south of the gas station, hotel corner at Wright Blvd and Hwy 965.  There are 7 doctors, four of which are specialists and three ER doctors.  Also on staff are 9 certified vet assts, 10 vet assts, 5 receptionists and 1 hospital mgr.  They hope to hire another ER vet in the next year.  Kathy ran down the various specialty areas that now exist in veterinary science and it’s like reading a directory of a regular hospital: internal medicine, surgery, dermatology, ophthalmology, oncology, cardiology, anesthesiology, emergency & critical care and others.  EIVSC works closely with the local and area vet clinics to provide services after hours, in acute emergency situations or when the local clinics are swamped and someone needs immediate care.  Business has steadily improved since it opened in 2005, indicating a strong need for this service in eastern Iowa.  Thanks so much for the talk, Kathy and enjoy the mug.

Word for the dayUnfortunately, there was no intelligent life at the meeting and therefore, no word for the day as word master, Don Grimm, was elsewhere.
