Kiwanis Club of Cedar Rapids

The meeting was called to order by President Bob Hatala, Esq.  29 Members in attendance.

Guests:  Barbara Hoffman, Director of RSVP (guest of Rod Thorpe).  Barb turned in application for membership. 

Birthdays: Dave Graeff 7/3   39 once again

Anniversaries:  Charlene & Dick Boardman

Announcements: 1. There will be a short board meeting immediately following today’s luncheon.

2. Mary Corkery reported that she still has 17 spots open in August for the Kernels’ games which equates to $350 add’l dollars for the Club if filled.  
 
Happy Bucks:  Dick Boardman – for anniversary (what a surprise); John Anderson – survived his boat driving on a recent fishing trip but the propeller didn’t; Jim Platt – good to be back after missing a week; Ron Sundermann - $5 for London & Paris trip, hit son’s card before leaving for trip, French sandals, new tennis shoes that actually fit and a 5th buck just because; Dan Breitbach – parent’s anniversary; Don Grimm – happy Ron made it back; and John Schweitzer – investment banker and pigeon’s ability to still put a deposit on a BMW.

Speaker:   Doug Dix introduced Naomi Williams, a registered nurse and certified CPR trainer who works for Doug’s company.  Naomi covered the new CPR technique (2 breaths/30 chest compressions); the Heimlich maneuver; and several other aspects surrounding CPR.  She will be running several CPR certification sessions in the near future which any club member can register for by contacting Doug.

Word for the day:  Don Grimm, sage wordmeister and all round good guy, challenged us with “contretemps”: a. an inopportune occurrence; an untoward accident; an unexpected mishap or hitch.  b. a disagreement or argument; a dispute.  Once again we came up several tools shy of a half full tool belt and didn’t correctly answer.
