NEWSLETTER Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club Wednesday, June 27th 2007 The meeting was called to order by President Chuck Wehage. 27 Members in attendance. Guests: Birthdays: Jim Doyne, Dave Graeff, and Pam Landon. The membership sang “Happy Birthday” even though Mr. Doyne offered to pay us not to. Anniversaries: None Announcements: No meeting next Wednesday, July 4th. Board meeting July 10th. Next meeting July 11th. Happy Bucks: Joe Schmall for his 25th wedding anniversary; John Anderson for his attendance at the ”Indy Car Demolition Derby” last Sunday at Newton, Charlene Boardman at her fifth year of Kiwanis membership; and President Wehage at passing is instrument proficiency test so he can continue to fly the friendly skies in both good weather and bad. Next week’s program: Speaker: Michael Poggenklass introduced 4th District City Councilman Chuck Swore. Councilman Swore spoke about the Twins Pines Golf Course issue, Five Seasons Center issue, Zach Johnson Drive (as in roadway…) controversy, West Dale Mall issue, Farmstead property issue, and the Shaver Park issue. Members asked questions regarding many of the topics and offered suggestions for Mr. Swore to consider. Many members asked about the pros and cons of Downtown renewal and questioned whether or not we will ever see the big retail stores will ever be a part of Downtown...(the answer was “probably not”). Mr. Swore indicated that with the city being “broke” it is now forced to make decisions in a more businesslike and less parochial way. Word for the day: Don Grimm offered the word “doyen.” After several failed attempts at the correct definition, the membership declared themselves officially stumped.
