Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

The meeting was called to order by President Kelly Moore.  27 Members in attendance.

Announcements:  Foundation Board meeting 11:15  next Wednesday.

Byron Tabor reported success in organizing the Cedar Rapids EdgeWood (CREW) chapter of Kiwanis.  He seeks a donation of $7.96 plus 20 cents bottle deposit from our own Janet Blackledge – something about a wine purchase.  He invites all to the a charter party on June 5 to be held at the Hiawatha Community Center.

Ron Sunderman continues to collect old mobile phones. 

There’s  a Kiwanis State Golf Tournament in Adel on June 9. 

The annual Skip-A-Meal fundraiser is ongoing.

Happy Bucks:  Dan Breitbach expressed happiness over seeing his folks again.  Joe Nolte put in his last happy dollar as he moves to the Des Moines area after his latest career change; John Schweitzer talked about another free concert at Camp Courageous on April 27; Jim Platt was pleased with his new car.

Speaker:   Program Overview: Tina Herring of the Mission of Hope spoke about their facility across from the First Avenue Hy-Vee, and their services to the community homeless and needy.  They provide up to 1260 individuals each month, providing four meals per week.  Their beautifully renovated 100-year plus home, remodeled by the Cedar Rapids Home Builder’s Association, is now a full service shelter.  They accept clients who have been drinking – one of the few in town In order to help modify unhealthy behavior, there is a 6 PM curfew.  They experience 272 intakes a year, male and female.  Most are former offenders on release of one type or another.  They are available 24/7 as a shelter.  More information is available at www.missionofhope.org
