Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

Wednesday, April 9, 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Kelly Moore.  30 Members in attendance.

Guests: Brian Davis (soon to join); Marie DeVries –CR  Library Foundation

Birthdays:   Jim Platt & Richard Boardman last week

Anniversaries:  Mike Pogenklass & Steve Walrath last week

Announcements:  1. Guest Marie DeVries mentioned the Author Series the library is presenting.  A lilbrary rep will speak to us at a later meeting;

2. Ron Sunderman will coordinate a used cell phone collection to raise some cash – bring your old phones to any future meeting;

3. Jeff Hollingsworth reminded us that the Cedar Rapids EdgeWood (CREW) Kiwanis Club is being organized tomorrow at the new Hiawatha Community Center at 5:00;

4. Eight of us have signed up for the Families Helping Families Gala;

5. Dan Breitbach and friends painted a room at the McCauley Center on Kiwanis One Day (last Saturday);

6. There’s a Kiwanis golf outing at Adel on June 9 – President Moore will bring a signup sheet next week.

Happy Bucks:  Dick Boardman was happy that the painters represented us so well; Dan Breitbach responded with a buck and appropriate insult; John Schweitzer engaged in shameless promotion of two free concerts coming up – Sinclair Auditorium on Thursday April 10, and Sunday, April 13 for the Kirkwood and New Horizons bands, respectively (but not necessarily in that order.  He’s probably home shaving reeds as you read this.) Guest Marie DeVries put in a buck in celebration of a true free lunch (she, or another library advocate, will have to sing for their supper at a later date).

Speaker:  Randy Hartman and Bernie Hayes described their successful quest to win the top prize at Oshkosh for a plans-built aircraft.  They took 15 years to build it and make it perfect.  The plane is a fiberglass layup Rutan LongEasy, with over 60 modifications of the published plans.  It’s name is “Ten Forward”, derived from the lounge deck of the Starship Enterprise on the Star Trek show.

The registration number of their plane is N812SP.   The SP harks back to their nickname in college at LeTourneau University, “Salt and Pepper’, and the 812 is the numerical equivalent of the word “Filio” (brotherly love) in Greek.

Tina Herring – Mission of Hope

Word for the day:   Solecism: An impropriety or irregularity in speech or diction; a violation of the rules of grammaror syntax; properly, a faulty concord.  Another definition was equally weak.
