NEWSLETTER Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club Wednesday, March 13, 2008 The meeting was called to order by President. Members in attendance unknown. Guests: None Birthdays: None Anniversaries: Lonna Drewelow, Bob Dye Announcements: Dan Breitbach reported that the Farmer’s Breakfast served about 900 patrons. They ran out of eggs and sausage. Happy Bucks: Jim Platt rejoiced in Xavier’s run in the 4A tourney; Duane Kurrelmeyer spoke of the good attendance at the Farmer’s Breakfast; Ray Vaughn was very glad to be back ( and looking great); John Anderson related his trepidation at the sudden silence from the generator – probably caused by the cold temps outside; Chuck Wehage was glad to be done watching TV on Sunday nights, now that The Wire is over; Doug Dix is happy to have a new assistant – so much so that he turns his cell phone off at Kiwanis lunches now. Speaker: Dan Mann, Airport Director of The Eastern Iowa Airport, gave a status report of the airport. The airport, unlike other regional airports in our area, is totally self supported – no property taxes go into the equation. Dan was proud of the recent improvements to the signage around the airport, which solved a huge problem. He spends a good amount of time convincing airlines to add service and destinations to our airport, and has been pretty successful at it.. The big news to the private aviators is the planned reconstruction of the main runway to the tune of $46 million. Dan says Frontier Airlines might be adding cheap flights west from CID in the near future. Word for the day: Inveterate: confirmed by habit; firmly established by long continuance Submitted: Chuck Wehage |
