Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

Wednesday, March 6, 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Kelly Moore.  Members in attendance unknown.

Guests:    Sarah Schmall, Noel Moriarty, Laurie Worden

Birthdays:   None

Anniversaries:    Glen Fox (2001), Jim Moriarty (Various)

Announcements:  Don Grimm says receipts for the Farmer’s Breakfast are in excess of $10K; Joe Schmall says that the food has been ordered; A Families Helping Families Gala, their main annual fund raiser, is set for April19; Chairman Moore says that we need to consider sponsoring a camper for the IA-NE Leadership activity, April 18-20; April 5 is Kiwanis One Day – we need a service project; Jeff Hollingsworth is setting up an Interclub for March 19 with Marion Metro.

Happy BucksJim Platt mumbled something about a candidate for the Democratic  nomination for president; Chuck Wehage was happy his ’85 Pontiac is back from the fliver hospital; three Notre Dame graduates (almost, in Sarah’s case) recalled most of the Fight Song; Ron Sunderman came up with the Carroll, Iowa version, demonstrating his Concert Chorale voice; Grimm had a buck to talk about the ruts in the streets

Speaker:  Marlon Vogt, Cornhusker, professional engineer (Civil) and member of Alliant Energy’s Speakers Bureau, talked about the plans to build a modern, efficient coal plant in Marshalltown by 2013.  This would be a base-load plant, as opposed to wind or solar generation, which are inherently part time sources.  Alliant purchases a lot of green energy, but ownership is not always part of the deal.  Duane Arnold Energy Center was sold to Florida Power and Light.  All hydro facilities previously owned have all been sold off, although Alliant still purchases the energy they produce.  Alliant is looking into biomass – the Marshalltown plant will be able to burn some switchgrass.  More aggressive biomass plants must employ a fluidized bed firebox to burn the mix.
