Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

Wednesday, February 20, 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Kelly Moore.  25 Members in attendance.

Guests:  None

Birthdays:  None

Anniversaries:   None

Announcements:  1.  Kelly Moore mentioned a nice thank you letter that we received from the Salvation Army for ringing the bell.

2.  We’ve had four interclubs as of today and the possibility of another next Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the Xavier Key Club meeting.  Kelly Moore and Dan Breitbach are planning to attend.  The meeting is at 7:30 a.m. in Rm 217.

3.  Breitbach gave the pancake breakfast report
                Total tkts sold……..     1361

Individual tkts sold..      261

Corporate tkts sold.. 1100    (Goal is 1500 so we’re closing in)

Joe Schmall is only 55 tickets shy of selling 500 and continues to set a high standard.  With a little over two weeks remaining to sell, we need everyone to make the final push.  To date, only 19 members are on record as having sold tickets.  We have over 900 tickets in our members’ hands, so if we sell them, we will do very well.  Dan also passed around the worker’s sign up sheet.

Happy Bucks:  There were only a few happy campers this week (probably due to the cold).  John Anderson – 2 bucks: one for Joe Schmall’s outstanding sales for the breakfast and the other for Joe starting to look a lot like Ellen; John Schweitzer – thank goodness he hasn’t had to haul out the 2x4’s to cover his drive; Keith Sutherland – happy that the pancake breakfast isn’t any earlier than March 8; and Dan Breitbach – just wondering if anyone else notices John Anderson’s double-edged compliments.

Speaker: Chuck Wehage introduced Kent Stock, current principal at Oakridge Middle School in the Linn Mar district, and the former head baseball coach at Norway High School during its Final Season in 1991.  Kent is a Luther grad, has an M.A. from Drake, and is married with 2 daughters.  He grew up loving baseball and was hoping for a career in pro baseball.  That didn’t happen so he started his teaching/coaching career at Belle Plaine HS, coaching junior high volleyball.  In 1990, he became the assistant baseball coach at Norway High School and the following year, when Jim Van Scoyoc, retired to take a pitching coach position with the Detroit Tigers, Kent got the head job at Norway 1991.  The recently released film, “The Final Season”, was a story about that 1991 season, the last in Norway’s storied baseball history as it was consolidating with Benton Community High School.  Kent said it was a wonderful and eye-opening experience being involved in a Hollywood movie.  Sean Astin, who played Kent in the movie, and his family, became close friends with the Stocks.  It took 15 years from the time the producer initially confirmed with Kent and Jim to produce the film and when it finally hit the big screen.

Word for the day:   Don educated us ever so slightly (we will forget) with “cabal” v. meaning to combine (together) for some secret or private end.  (Usually in a bad sense).  He forked over the $1 since several people came very close in answering.

Upcoming programs:    Next week we have Deb Frieze with Families Helping Families.  Mary Corkery is working on March and has 2-3 set up of which I failed to write down.
