Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

Wednesday, January 30, 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Kelly Moore.    26 Members in attendance.

Guests:    None

Birthdays:   Eldon Hans (2/6)

Anniversaries:    Jim Platt (2/3/04)

Announcements:   1.  Aaron Randolph has been a club member for 30 years and received a certificate.

2.  Dan Breitbach reported that 175 tickets (cash in hand) were sold this week for the pancake breakfast.  Additionally, several corporate sellers verbally reported an additional 75 tickets sold.  The corporate sales team met prior to today’s luncheon to review the chamber directory for additional companies to contact and got through the C’s.  He encouraged everyone to sell.

3.  Jeff Hollingsworth reported that an interclub has been set with the Marion Daybreak Club for Tuesday, February 12 at 7:00 a.m.

4.  John Locher announced that sign up for Taylor this week is strong.

5.  Kelly Moore announced that the foundation board will meet immediately following today’s luncheon.

Happy Bucks:  Jim Platt – happy to have an anniversary; Aaron Randolph – happy to have 30+ years of membership under his belt; Jim Moriarty – enjoyed his cross country skiing; Keith Sutherland – happy for the very cold downhill skiing recently and the fact that on June 23 or so, he will become a grandfather for the first time; Ron Sunderman – mom is doing well after a bad reaction to her chemo; John Locher – repaying his fine debt for publicity; Kelly Moore – happy that Dr. Graeff is happy after spending a day with his dog; Dr. Graeff – returning one of Kelly’s dollars ; and Don Grimm – happy that the Iowa weather’s been so bad he can get some work done in the garage.

Next week’s program:  Chuck Wehage is keeping us in suspense for next week.

Speaker:  The good news is that the CR Public Library is fully operational; the bad news is we didn’t have a speaker today to explain how operational it was.  Without a speaker, it was open forum time:

Kevin Carlson – asked everyone to check out the website; he’s archiving the board meeting minutes now;

Aaron Randolph – gave a quick overview of the investment policy for the foundation:  one half of the fund is in broad-based mutual funds; one quarter each in fixed income and cash.  The average annual return for the 11.75 years the foundation has existed is 7.89%.

Kelly Moore – the Mid-Year District Conference is March 8, the same day as the pancake breakfast.  It will be held in Council Bluffs.  It would be nice if we had a representative from the Club there.

Word for the day:   Don Grimm provided the Club with a moment of levity today as he gave us the word: “furibund”.  When asked by Kevin Carlson to spell it, Don kindly spelled “furious”, thus giving us the definition.  Something to keep in mind for the future when we are stumped (which is almost always).
